PNG contains the artwork only: no grid or symbols. PDF is a numbered reference chart. JSON is the editable format.

PIXEL & BRICK ART / FROM IMAGE TO GRID

Make every pixel count.

Choose the resolution first, then reduce the image to an automatic or fixed palette. Paint the final details and export without grid lines or labels.

Choose your resolution

Work on a 4–200 pixel grid. Smooth sampling suits photos; nearest-neighbor sampling preserves hard pixel edges when resizing existing art.

Shape the palette

Use colors extracted from the image, your own list, a six-color studio palette or eight grays. Optional Floyd–Steinberg dithering breaks tones into neighboring colors.

Export real pixels

At 1× scale, a 32×32 chart exports a 32×32 PNG. Larger integer scales repeat pixels sharply; empty cells remain transparent.

How to use this tool

01

Set the image and grid

Upload a cropped photo, choose columns and rows, and decide whether to keep transparent areas. Preserve proportions adjusts the row count.

02

Refine the pixel style

Try automatic colors or a fixed palette, then compare the result with dithering on and off. Paint, fill and replace colors to clean up the motif.

03

Save and export

Keep JSON for future edits. Export PNG at the exact grid size or a sharp integer scale; use PDF when you want a labeled reference.

Frequently asked questions

What does dithering do?

It distributes color error to nearby pixels using Floyd–Steinberg diffusion. It can suggest smoother tones with fewer colors, but may make small icons look noisy. Turn it off for flatter shapes.

Why is my PNG small?

The 1× export uses the actual chart resolution. Choose 4×, 8× or 16× for a larger image with sharp pixel edges. The export contains no editor grid or symbols.

Does transparency survive?

With Keep transparency enabled, source pixels with alpha below 128 become empty; other pixels become fully opaque. Erasing also creates empty pixels. PNG preserves these empty areas.

Can I edit the palette after converting?

Yes. Select a color, update its name or hex value, add a color, replace all pixels of one color, or remove unused entries. Save a JSON project to preserve the editable palette and grid.

Which palette should I use?

Automatic extraction follows the source image. A custom palette gives you control over every allowed color. The studio and grayscale choices offer a quick starting point.

Are my photos uploaded?

Image conversion and editing run in your browser. Drafts remain on this device. Download a JSON project before clearing browser data or switching computers.
